Oh life!’ were used. The room was darkened and a girl lay unmoving on the floor, her eyes closed. There were candles at her head and feet and Renaissance sacred music was playing. The other students stood around her in a circle and, each in her or his own time, came forward slowly and offered the phrase to her as a gift. At the end of the exercise the students were stunned by their emotions.

In the previous lesson they had memorised phrases that Juliet’s father uses towards her when she defies him – ‘hang thee, young baggage!’ you green-sickness carrion,’ you tallow-face,’ and so on. Students took turns to crouch in the middle of a tight circle with the others hurling those phrases at her.

In just two lessons the students had experienced frightening abuse from a parent and the feelings surrounding the death of a family member. And they were real, vivid, experiences. There was discussion after each exercise but every student had felt those emotions, and the talking was informed by that.

That’s the first reason why we do, and must, teach Shakespeare. Shakespeare not only provides every emotion a human being can have but he does it in a way that is real.
