A Paramedic is profession which provides emergency medical care for patients who are in need of it. They usually are the first medical care personal that reaches the patient.
A Paramedic is the highest level of emergency medical training available in New York. Paramedic are also known as EMTs, since they technically are EMTs, however they are addressed as paramedics to avoid confusion between them and lower level EMTs. Lower level EMTs are usually act as partners for paramedics.
The different levels of EMTs are:
Certified First Responder (CFR)
Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B)

If you want to become a paramedic. You must first become a Certified Medical First Responder (CFR) in the state of New York. You must fulfill following requirements before enrolling in a CFR course:
- High School diploma, GED or equivalent.
- Submit a complete application for Emergency Medical Services Certification, including criminal records.
- Successfully finish an approved New York State CFR course.
- Receive a passing course score on the written and practical exams.
- Be at least 16 years of age, by the end of the month in which they will take the written exam.
After you become a certified CFR. You must enroll in EMT-Basic training.
You must be at least 18 years of age and fulfill following requirements as mentioned above.
You must then complete and pass the course and become a certified EMT in the state of New York.
EMT Basic training can be found at most community colleges.
EMT-Basic training covers mostly cardiac emergencies, patient assessment, airway management and trauma.
Further training is required in most states, such as EMT-intermediate training. Which expands on the teachings from EMT-Basic-Training. Training can take 30-350 hours to complete. An EMT-Intermediate can administer intravenous fluids, analyze heart rhythms and administer medications.
Once you have passed the EMT-Intermediate training.
You may begin to apply to one of following institutions of learning listed below for paramedic training.

The program usually takes 1-2 years (4 semesters) to complete and is the highest level one can reach within the emergency medical care field. Paramedic training will cover advanced medical skills, physiology and anatomy.
The Certification of a paramedic is earned by the completion of the NREMT exam which is a 2 part exam with a written and practical examination. Majority of states will require that you renew your licensure every 2-3 years.
