Gardening with Young Children

Home gardens are making a comeback in the United States. Everyone from the First Lady to moms, dads, and teachers on the home front are planting flowers, vegetables, and herbs. There are a lot of reasons for this. Partly, it’s a great lesson in economics and saving money by growing your own food. Gardening is also full of teachable moments about healthy eating. Finally, it’s just plain fun. Victory gardens were all the rage during World War II. This was due to the shortage of public food supply, as well as an effort to boost public morale. Today, “victory” gardens (fruits, vegetables, and herbs) are a fantastic way to teach children how to be “green,” economical, and nature-oriented.

By introducing children to the wonderful world of gardening and to the intricacies of nature, you will open their worlds to new ideas and experiences. Is there a greater gift?

“The years of early childhood are the time to prepare the soil” – Rachel Carson

These summer days, full of ripened fruits and vegetables in the farmers’ markets and grocery stores, have us thinking about planting our own garden. This is absolutely something you can do with your children on your outdoor playground!

Stephanie from The Adventurous Child is our go-to garden expert. Here are some of her tips for exploring nature with children: Teach them the ground rules for exploring nature and gardening

  • Take only things that won’t harm the environment
  • Avoid picking wild flowers and breaking branches
  • Respect
  • Plan for your garden
    • Will you plant things you can eat?
    • Will you plant flowers to beautify?
    • Consult with Drug and Poison Control about your plant choices
    • How much sun will the area get?
    • How close is the water source?
    • Will the garden area be safe from the mainstream of play traffic?
    • Smart Ideas
      • Limit the duration of the task
      • Work with small groups
      • Wear old clothing

Gardening with kids is totally do-able. It’s just a matter of education, preparation, and just a little patience. There are a lot of options when it comes to gardening. A mini garden allows children to access all sides of the garden to plant seeds, pull weeds and water the plants without actually stepping into the garden. (Great for staying neat.) They can dig, plant, nurture and harvest a variety of plants. This is the perfect size for planting some flowers by the front door; or planting vegetables that the children can grow and eat for a healthy snack.

Speaking of “yum,” why not consider adding a pizza garden to your facility? Make a delicious pizza to share by growing pizza herbs, onions and tomatoes.

Have you ever wondered about the underground world of roots, worms, and insects? Jump into that world with a root garden! Children can learn about the growth process as they plant seeds, water, weed and harvest the “crops.” Periodically, children can open the Observation Doors and study the underground world of the root garden. These experiences will lead to conversations about nature and science.

As Rachel Carson wrote, “If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder … he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement, and mystery of the world we live in” (The Sense of Wonder). By sharing the joys and mysteries of gardening with your children, you will have the opportunity to maintain their sense of wonder about this world.

A Teacher Students Will Not Forget

I asked a group of students what they remembered about their favorite teachers, and they all gave me good answers.  “He was interesting.”  “He controlled his class.”  “She was involved in her students’ lives.”  “She loved us and showed us she cared.”  “He was always prepared.”  I realized as I read through the students’ papers that I could learn from each one, and I could learn from their teachers.  One of the students wrote about a teacher I will never forget.

Miss Siebenhaar is a teacher whose students will not forget her.  After years of making a difference as a grade school teacher, she broadened her influence by teaching college students how to make a difference.  These college students learned to love teaching and have gone all over the world investing in others.  Miss Siebenhaar has had a world-wide influence because she makes everyone special to her, makes every day important, and makes every lesson vital.  She enjoys teaching, so her students enjoy learning.  She is a master teacher, and one from whom others should learn.  I know I have learned from her.

1.  She made everyone special to her.

I was a little intimidated when I first entered Miss Siebenhaar’s classroom, but the can of pop on my desk that said, “I can” put a smile on my face.  I realized that this teacher was different because she gave of herself to each student.  She passed around a calendar so everyone could fill in his birthday.  On each person’s birthday, she gave a birthday gift and had the class sing “Happy Birthday.”  She worked to get to know each student individually and tried to meet each one’s needs.  She genuinely believed in her students, and her comments on their papers and her remarks after a job well done (or poorly done) showed that.

2.  She made every day important.

Miss Siebenhaar was always in her class and always prepared with something new.  Some days she would stay up until the early morning hours to finish researching something for one of her classes, but she came to class every day looking refreshed and gave her best.  With her positive spirit and praising speech, she never let bad circumstances ruin her classes.

3.  She made every lesson vital.

I have learned countless facts and many Biblical truths, but Miss Siebenhaar presented facts intertwined with spiritual application.  She made her Christianity practical, and she applied it to every single lesson she taught.  Her reading lessons were life changing because she masterfully and practically applied each lesson to her students’ lives.  She breathed everything she had into each lesson, and she made a difference because that was her purpose and her goal.

4.  She made learning enjoyable.

As a college student, I did not always enjoy my classes, but I always enjoyed Miss Siebenhaar’s because each class was a breath of fresh air.   She did everything she could to wow her students and to get her students involved.  She prepared and presented videos and visuals that enhanced her lessons.  She filled each class hour with new material, lively games, and exciting activity.  She made her students enjoy learning because she really enjoyed teaching.

I will never forget Miss Siebenhaar because she has made her classes unforgettable.  I get to choose how my students will remember me or if my students will remember me.  If I make everyone special to me, make every day important to me, make every lesson vital, and make learning enjoyable, I too can make a difference.  I can be a teacher my students will not forget.

Before Your Hire a Tutor Think How Much Parents Can Help Their Children Learn.

International league tables of children’s performance at school show the UK and US are falling behind other countries particularly in core subjects such as English and Maths. In response many parents are turning to private tutors to boost their children’s education. But why?

There are two parts to learning

  1. Learning new facts or skills
  2. Practicing using those facts or skills

By far the most important is practice as this consolidates and reinforces what has been learned. This will be obvious to people who

  • Play sports, music, chess or cards
  • Learn a new language,  to dance or to paint

Practice is the difference that makes the difference. Regular practice is the best kind of practice.  Only a few things can be learned in a 5 or 10 minute session. But if you have a session every day what you learn over a year can be considerable.  Even better regular sessions give a chance to review what has been learned so it doesn’t fade away.

If you can afford a tutor everyday then great but many children only have an hour or so of tuition once a week without practice in between tuition sessions.  This means 1 day to learn and 6 to forget.

It is possible to teach yourself and many people do. It is possible to establish your own practice regime and many people do. But it is much easier if you have a coach.

For almost all children it is far more likely that they will stick with regular practice if they have someone with them. As a parent you are likely to be with them more than anyone else. So why don’t parents do more? Perhaps they feel

  • They can’t make a difference
  • It will take too much time
  • They are not qualified
  • Learning only takes place in school or with a tutor

Some parents start but either don’t continue or do not continue regularly.

This crazy. It is common for parents to drastically underestimate the effect they have on their children particularly when they are young. Many of the hardest things your children will ever learn they learn with you such as walking, talking and reading.

Children tend to adopt their parents attitudes and expectations

  • If you think learning is fun and important they will too
  • If you think learning is boring and unnecessary then perhaps they will too
  • Whether you expect your children to succeed or fail they will pick up on your attitude.

As a parent no doubt you talk to your child. No doubt you also read to them, listen to them read and helped them learn to write. I would be surprised if you didn’t also write numbers and practice counting, if only by chanting or listening to nursery rhymes. This is how children learn, together with you in shared activities.

So why not carry on, make up stories with your children then practice writing them down.  When you read a book, watch a film or TV show talk about how the characters felt, what led them to do the things they did. Describe different ways the story could have ended or begun.

With numbers why stop at counting? Playing games such as snakes and ladders (or chutes and ladders) introduces the idea of adding via counting on.

When your children start school and begin arithmetic, why not spend a few minutes doing sums with them?  You may not notice much after a day or even a week but if you keep it up after a term or a year there will be a clear and noticeable achievement.

Teaching in a Private School

For a teacher who is just starting out, the choice between practicing in a private or public school can be life-changing. The differences are so dramatic so the right choice should be made. Making a difference to students can be a reality or just a dream depending on the choice the teacher makes.

There are four main reasons why a teacher should consider teaching in a private school. They include: thin management structure, small class size, small schools, and ideal teaching conditions. The four reasons are elaborated below.

Unlike a school district, private schools have their own administrative rules to follow. They are not part of an administrative group that alters their methods of teaching. This removes the thought of having to go through different things in order to get an issue straightened out. Because of the considerable difference in the size of population, everything is more manageable. Not only in the number of students, but in the number of co-teachers and other administrators that they have to work with every single day.

Toronto independent schools have the advantage of smaller class sizes. This greatly helps a teacher become effective in his craft. A teacher’s main objective is to share knowledge to let the students learn. In a public school where the number of students can range from 30-40, managing the students becomes the main course of their job rather than to teach. In a private school, teachers are assigned 10-12 students which are obviously more manageable. A teacher can now concentrate on giving the student knowledge while able to concentrate on each student as needed.

Teaching in a Toronto private school also means having more chances to personally connect with students. A private school typically has 300-400 students. At the most they can carry around 1000 students. That is considerably low compared to 2000-4000 students in a public school. This gives the teachers a chance to personally know the students and attach themselves, knowing that some students learn better when they know they can communicate freely with the teacher.

Being in a Toronto private school gives the teacher more ways to be creative in teaching his craft. A public school teacher is bound by certain curriculum that is set by the people in charge. The public school teacher does not have any means of teaching except for the one that is expected. For private school teachers, it gives them the chance to show off their skill in their most productive ways. Having the capabilities to do all these, they can instill the lessons in their students more effectively.

How you can Train Children Social Abilities via a Playground

For a lot of children childcare, preschool, and kindergarten may be the first contact outdoors from the family along with other children. All of the training about discussing and being nice that Mother and Father have attempted so difficult to train don’t really come up until they have to connect to other kids their very own age.

When playing about the playground (or perhaps in a class) children have to relearn their social abilities within an atmosphere of peers-not grown ups who’ll surrender to fits and sweet smiles. Due to this, a playground could possibly be the perfect spot to reinforce training trained both at home and in class regarding social niceties. It is also an essential place because it shows training that might not be learned elsewhere. Through encounters for example waiting in line for that slide, waiting to make use of the shifts, playing as well as toys, as well as waiting to speak to Mother, children can find out about discussing, persistence, and taking turns. Whilst they might have been trained to talk about before, needing to practice it when having fun with another child will train the lesson a lot better than hearing Mother repeat it in your own home.

Taking activates your swing or slide helps children observe that the planet does not revolve entirely around them. Children will rapidly learn on their own that others won’t wish to have fun with them when they are not kind. Although most children don’t have the vocabulary to state these concepts, kindness and niceness are certainly recognized throughout play, and kids are naturally attracted to individuals’ kids who’re nice to everybody. A fast check in the adult in control usually will even help an average or selfish child learn how to play nice, not only why. From time to time, however, there’s more involved than angels playing. Sometimes play grounds have bullies or tricky children who are able to hurt others. Play grounds are a good spot to learn how to operate for you. A young child has the capacity to stand their ground and explain they do not such as the actions of some other, but could get a grownup involved if required (there ought to always be a grownup around play grounds for safety’s sake).

Play grounds offer a secure spot to find out about how you can be social. Children’s conversations can occur, helping communication abilities to develop. Moral and ethical training could be trained both at that time and after being debated. A good example of this is when Tony pressed Alice lower. Alice includes a choice, whether or not to communicate how hurtful the ps3 Tony, to break the rules, in order to go to a grownup. Alice’s Mother presently has the opportunity to discuss the best factor related to Alice. This wouldn’t have presented itself with no playground scene. Aside from these reasons, you will find a number of other advantages of social experience play grounds, whether at childcare, schools, or parks. Several benefits are physical. A young child who plays in a playground will rapidly find out how he suits space, the limits and miracles of their own body, and also to love being active and fit. These training continues with him throughout his existence, and can help him within the a long time. Play grounds are essential to some growing child to ensure that he is able to grow not just physically, but socially too.

Ways to motivate a kid

Motivation is a not easy topic to talk about the least. As it’s normally said, Motivation usually assists as it provides a positive atmosphere around a student. But the number one-step to motivate a youngster or a child is to know his/her interest area. It’s easier to motivate a child/ student in those domains on which he/she has interest. Instead hand if the student is pushed towards an area in which he doesn’t have any interest can be harming for him.

A student who has no motivation or who has been demotivated by other or by circumstances will show through their body language, the way the talk, their appearance and facial expression how they are feeling. It is crucial, for that reason, to identify the outward hints of the unmotivated teenager.

Motivation done, considering the hobby of the pupil proves the best as that is the best area of improvement. Motivation encourages development in performance which further leads to successfulness.

Recognition from the boss or a trainer enhances the confidence of a person. Acknowledgement is the recommended strategy to motivate a person.

Motivation assists in understanding, as a student who is motivated, is full of energy and positivism and who will motivate others will shine with better favorable results.

Motivation is there in every single student. A student might be attracted in classes and assignments and the other might have an inclination towards sporting activities and extra-curricular activities. Here motivation is there, only the factors differ. Attaching academic score with extra-curricular activities would motivate a student to pay attention in the class and assignments as well and vice-versa.

Motivation is encouragement. It promotes anyone to work better than the last. It encourages a student to do what is difficult for him/her. It encourages a student to explore those areas where s/he thought he is not capable.

Motivation gives additional insight for a student and any professional. Motivation is the prime prerequisite and that is why numerous companies arrange motivational speeches and schools go for counseling sessions for their employees and students.

Motivation helps in whole progress and clarity of goals in one’s mind. A motivated person is the most successful person ever.

5 proved way to motivate students –

1. Reward: Rewards and privileges are great motivational tools for work hard. Teachers can use a variety of them to encourage student participation.

2. Expectations: Teachers should set logical goals and objectives for every lesson that allow their students to progress in the classroom. Expect students to achieve the objectives, and they will. Studies show that students succeed at higher rates when their teachers have high satisfaction for them.

3. Relevance: Show students how what they are just learning matters in real life. Guide students to discuss the new material, and allow students to draw on their own experiences to learn and grasp the new material.

4. Incorporate different learning styles: Use a variety of options in the classroom to facilitate the lesson. Classroom chats consist of whole group learning.

5. Incorporate the kid’s family. :  Students want far more support at home for learning. Thus wherever possible involve the families as much as possible.

Liberal arts education

A liberal arts degree program offers a more well-rounded learning experience than a technical, vocational or business program. These programs introduce students to books as well as the philosophy and science that form disciplined and creative habits of thought. One of these programs trains an individual how to think rather than what to think and can lead to endless possibilities.A liberal arts program will train an individual to think and draw on one’s education over a lifetime, which is much more practical and precious than mastering a field that is constantly evolving. These programs should teach students to figure out what they love to do, improve in that field and provide them with the ability to develop and continue to learn so that are able to adapt to change rather than become victims of change. These programs emphasize the importance of art and athletics in education as well as the importance of core subjects like reading, writing, science and math. Both men and women participate in golf, lacrosse, tennis and outdoor track & field. Men also participate in baseball and volleyball while women also participate in rowing, softball and water polo. The list is almost never-ending as with various distance learning programs you can go into with a liberal arts degree. In last few years the liberal art courses has gained enormous popularity and in next few years it is even expected to be one of the most favored distance learning courses. Undoubtedly, today an accredited distance learning liberal art degree holds much respect and offer diversity and flexibility in career that can is very rare to be found in any other degree.

Liberal arts colleges in the United States have traditionally tilted the balance in favor of educating the whole person. Character building was viewed as equal in importance to intellectual development. The core of the liberal arts experience is a commitment to the excitement of learning. It’s obvious to many of us that we are witnessing radical changes in the entry-level skills required for jobs as they evolve toward higher-level skills, especially the skills of analytical thinking, problem solving, communication, computation, and working in teams. To be successful in the workplace of the future, individuals will need more than technical training.Vocational, professional and technical degrees on the other hand, typically focus on just one specialization. Online liberal arts degrees include associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degrees, although the bachelor’s degree is generally the most popular. The following schools’ programs are among the top 10 online programs offering liberal studies degrees in the United States. This will include basic math, English, economics, history and humanities courses, as well as a couple of electives, which every typical college student has to take.A lucrative degree in the humanities can offer a variety of career training options depending on your field of interest.

If you haven’t chosen a career training path, studying the humanities can provide an appreciation and great services for society. Studying the humanities can also bring in new career options for you to choose from.Although you may have natural talent, many employers favor some formal career training with a minimum of an associate’s degree in fields like visual arts, communications, or computerized design. The best benefit of this program is that being a graduate in liberal arts an individual can find a variety of careers, particularly in media, law, business and social work. Unlike very specialized pre-professional programs, liberal art programs are not focused on a specific vocation; rather it prepares students to think decisively, write convincingly and read between the lines.Environmental Science Distance Learning Program- This distance learning program primarily focuses on the examination of the social aspects of environmental policies and regulations.

Best innovative ideas for the classroom

The modern classroom is a very different place to the ones most of us inhabited in our youth, and getting to grips with the range of technologies available can be a daunting task to new teachers. However, by doing a little research and heading online to compare notes and discuss your experiences with like-minded teachers, you could find it easier to kit out your classroom with the most beneficial teaching resources available.

One of the most significant agendas governing the development of classroom resources is the understanding that pupils learn in different ways, and at different levels. It’s no longer widely accepted that all children should take in knowledge at the same rate, and pupils who may previously have felt left behind in decades past now have the opportunity to learn at their own pace in many areas. Similarly, fast learners who are proficient at completing tasks ahead of their classmates will no longer have to feel stifled or like they are being let down by their peers.

Independent learning resources such as monitors give pupils greater control over their own learning, but it’s still important for teachers to retain their authority, of course. Interactive whiteboards are a proven method of capturing children’s attention and imagination, as the information you teach can be accompanied by vibrant images and multimedia files, such as sound and video. Pupils who are more engaged with the subject being taught are more likely to succeed, and by encouraging them to interact with information presented on the screen, you could also develop their confidence.

Pupils could be engaged even further by making learning fun, in the form of interactive games. This technology was in its infancy when many of today’s teachers were pupils themselves, but has come a long way since, and pupils of all ages can benefit enormously when suitable and relevant games are incorporated into lesson plans covering a variety of topics – from maths or science concepts to key moments in history.

Interactive teacher resources aren’t only of benefit to pupils though, as teachers can also reduce some of the pressure of their daily routine when preparing lessons in advance, or even downloading them from dedicated websites. This will give you more time to dedicate to the pupils’ learning experience while in the classroom environment, and when you prepare a solid lesson plan you won’t have to worry so much about your lessons finishing on time.
